Mentor Blog #1

During my sophomore year, I was a part of the ladder leader team that belongs to the ISP office. We organized events for international freshmen. And this is how I met Maureen. She attended one of the events that we organized. We happened to sit down next to each other and we started talking. Maureen is the wife of a professor in Wheaton. She is very active in the international community in Wheaton. Our first conversation was all over the place. We talked about our experiences abroad, our favorite food, and a bunch of random things. I was surprised by the way that she talked to me. Instead of being an elder, she is more like a friend. After that long conversation, we exchanged our phone number and started to meet regularly. Last semester, I did study abroad and didn’t get a chance to meet Maureen. So, this is actually my first time meeting her since last summer. I talked to her about my experience studying abroad and my transition back to Wheaton. She also shared several things...

Mentor Blog #1

This past Friday I had the privilege of talking to my mentor Dan Hwang. He is an orthodontist and he has been counseling and guiding me since freshman year of high school. He has helped me with everything from picking a college to deciding what my major should be. Because of the impact he has already had in my life I have asked him to facetime me this semester in order to help me throughout this semester. For our first conversation Dan and I began talking about how my semester was going. For those of you who don't know, I switched from Pre-Med to Bus/Econ and Computer Science this semester because I couldn't see myself spending the next decade of my life in medical school. Because this was the major focus of the last conversation we had, he wanted to make sure that I was feeling good about the decision that I had made.  I then proceeded to ask him questions about knowing and being sure of God's plan for me. He told me that it was okay to worry, and then he gave me a ver...

Resume advice-blog 1

Management Mentor Blog 28 January 2018 Resume advice I met with my mentor, Paul Petricca, about a week ago in lower Beamer for coffee to discuss the beginning of this mentorship and it actually formed into a concrete discussion of resume advice. At first he wanted to know why I had requested him to be my mentor and we chatted about similar personalities, interests, and goals concerning this mentorship that will be continued at least through graduation, yet there was solid advice produced in this meeting. The main advice Mr. Petricca gave to me that was very helpful was about building my resume was including facts that jump off the page to the employers, their impact on your life, and how to tell the employer what sets you apart. His focus was not about length of the resume, but highlighting key components that are applicable to the job you are applying for as well as having a personal story about how and what those experiences/opportunities benefitted, grew, and taught you. The ...

Internships and Vocation

Mr. Miller is a lot of things: financial advisor, parent, hunter, Christian. He’s the father of one of my best friends at Wheaton, and was kind enough to entertain the idea of mentoring me for this management class. While I knew Mr. Miller before this project, he was extremely helpful in answering questions I had about vocation, the subject of this first blog post. To paraphrase our conversation, I pressed him as to when he knew what he wanted to pursue a career in financial management and what his career trajectory looked like post-college. His answers were interesting, largely because I chose business-economics as my major for its ambiguity (in tandem with marketing and accounting classes). Our experiences thus far have been somewhat similar (we both made money growing up through seasonal arbitrage, and always had an interest in financial analysis), but differ in that he assumed the latter would largely factor into his career choice, and I have no such premonition. One thing t...

Mentor Blog post 1

Tice Wilkerson Dr. Schaller  Management  1/23/18 Mentor Blog 1 Recently, I was able to sit down and connect with a longtime mentor of mine, Chris Behrmann. Chris began investing in me when I was in the 8th grade through a church program by inviting me to be a part of his small group. Our families had known each other distantly but he was determined to get to know me on a deeper level. He has mentored me through high school and even into college. Chris is an incredibly athletic dad in his 40's; he spent his college years playing soccer at Clemson. Chris is also a very busy pharmaceutical salesman. I am incredibly thankful for the time he takes away from his wife, kids, and work to invest in me. Most recently, Chris and I sat down to get breakfast. We spent a good deal of time just catching up before we got into serious conversation. One of the things I most appreciate about Chris and meeting with him is that there is never a strict agenda or schedule, rather, good c...
