I was able to meet with my Dad tonight for over an hour.  He had some really good advice on how to become an effective leader. We first addressed my weaknesses which would prevent me from being an effective manager.  He pointed out how I need to prioritize being on time.  He also suggested that I learn to delegate tasks to others.  If I am able to assign specific roles to people, I will be an effective manager.  The timeliness of this assignment is great because I am actually applying to be a leader of the chapel band for next year.  We discussed ways I can be a good leader, which included these ideas of timeliness, role setting, organization, and scheduling.  He said that I need to work on organization, as well as being ahead of schedule with a plan.

He also pointed out some areas that I am good at.  I said that I am good at vision, having an idea of what I want to do and how I want to do it.  The trick is to put these good ideas into action.  He stressed the importance of getting things done ahead of time and having a set schedule.  To be an effective chapel band manager, I will need to be aware of people's needs and the roles that each will take in the band.  I will need to get to know each member of the band to establish good relationship with them.  He says that leadership is something that comes naturally for me, while organization odes not.  He stressed the importance of avoiding procrastination.  We also discussed the ability to get a group of people to do something they don't want to do and enjoy it.  He says that good leaders have this capability.  I need to recognize their needs, and there is a difference between leadership and management.  He says that good mangers have good leadership and vice versa. He also gave an example of bad leadership: A youth leader I had in high school.  He gave examples of how this leader was unorganized and did not make an effort to get to know me.  From this mentoring session, I learned how to be a better leader and realized the importance of getting to know those I am in leadership over.

My Dad was in charge of a squadron in the military, and I really respect him in this area.  I am appreciative of his willingness to share areas that I need to improve.  I will take his suggestions very seriously and work on ways that I can better myself and those around me.  Especially in the area of organization, I will take steps to plan out courses of action and make sure I am always ahead of the game.  By planning ahead, I will avoid stress.  I am thankful for my Dad's suggestion to really get to know those I am working with so I can better understand their needs.  In picking a team, I will make sure to pick people I believe can effectively complete each desired task.  I will make sure to work on my areas of weakness and continue to thrive in my areas of strength.

  1. I think it's really helpful to analyze your strengths and weaknesses with someone who knows you very well. I used to do this by myself and then realized that my own opinion is too subjective. Your conversation with your Dad seems quite beneficial and it encourages me to try this with my parents as well. Thank you for sharing~
