This past week, I was able to have a video call
with my older brother Nathan. Being 10 years older than me, Nathan has always
been a great role model throughout my life. From teaching me how to shoot a
basketball to getting ready for college classes, Nathan remained interested in
helping me out. Choosing him to be my mentor was an easy decision due to our
similar interests and upbringings. Nathan is now married and living in the city
of Chicago, which makes it easy for me to meet up during the weekends. He studied
at Washington University in St. Louis and graduated with a psychology degree,
planning on going into med school. However, he found a strong connection to
business and is now working at SymphonyIRI doing data research and analysis.
We first caught up on all the things that were
going on in our lives and the usual conversation about how classes were going.
He then casually asked me if I still am interested in business/economics and
doing business in the future. I bet he initially thought I would give him a
simple “Yeah probably”, but I realized while giving my answer that I’m not entirely sure of what I want to
do in my future. From what could have been a quick video call to see how things
were going turned into a lengthy conversation of future occupations I may be
interested in. Thankfully, my brother once again was able to help me work
though my thoughts and help me come up with ideas. Nathan had a lot of
experience with what I am going through regarding future jobs and interests as
he changed his focus from medicine to business. He explained to me how hard and
confusing it was to switch his plans around, but communicating with others and
trusting in God helped him make his choice. Instead of trying to rely on only
what I think, he urged me to seek out guidance and talk through my plans with
others. Also, I should always try to take time to step back and ask God for
help in decisions and keep a relationship with Him. Nathan definitely gave me
comfort in explaining how God will work things out in the end and how he was a
personal example of this. Lastly, Nathan encouraged me to keep my head up and
try not to overthink about things without talking to my friends and family.
I think it's really nice that your brother and you are able to communicate that care to each other so effectively. I think the advice that your brother gave you was very insightful because sometimes when we try to deal with issues on our own, we can lose sight of what our main goal is. I believe it’s important to receive assistance from those who know you well because they want the best for you and will give you advice based off of that care.
ReplyDeleteIt's super nice that you and your brother have a great friendship! Finding out your career can be very difficult. It is important to pray because only God knows what is best for you.
ReplyDeleteIts really nice to see you and your brother having this mentor-mentee relationship. I have a younger brother and seeing your brother give you advice and just talk you through things encourages me to do the same for my brother. I hope you and your brother can continue to foster and grow this relationship
ReplyDeleteI definitely feel the same way about my major as well. I'm unsure about what I want to do with it. But its reassuring that your brother was able to remind you that God works things out in the end because that is something I struggle to believe sometimes.
