Most recently, my mentor and I have talked a lot about relationships. Given that he is practically finished with college he had a lot of insight into relationships both here on campus and relationships from back home. I have realized that after leaving for college a lot of my friendships that I had in High School have faded away and new relationships have taken their place. I struggle with letting go of the past relationships because there were so many memories with those friends however I have noticed and my mentor has helped me to notice that the friendships that I am forming now are ones that are going to last throughout my life. He mentioned to me that a lot of the friends that I am making now are going to be the guys that are standing in my wedding one day. Its a crazy thing to think about but he was right. I know that because I am involved with sports on campus, making friends has been quite easy and I am blessed for that. I have been blessed with outstanding roommates and guys that I am going to be able to call throughout the late hours of the night. He left the conversation with a quote from the Greek Poet Euripides: "Friends show their love in times of trouble, not in times of happiness"
Other relationships that I have asked for prayer for are the relationships that I have with my Family and the ones I have with my Girlfriend. It has truly been awesome to feel that my relationship with my family has not faded but instead, it has grown stronger. My mentor had mentioned to me that the love that you have for your family will be the foundation for relationships in the future. I have felt that even though I am 1000 miles away from my family, I have never felt closer to them. That's something that I have been very happy about and will continue to pursue throughout my time here at Wheaton. My mentor mentioned to me that the best way to keep that up is to call home a couple times a week just to check in and see how the family is doing. I know that I haven't been the best with that but It is something I know I need to work on and I am excited to see how it goes for the future.

Thanks for being so honest about the relationships in your life Jake. I'm glad you were blessed with so many great friendships wherever you went, and I hope that continues! Thanks again for your honesty and willingness to share
ReplyDeleteIt is great to see how these relationships you've made at Wheaton have been so important to you. I also went through a struggle with having my past relationships with friends in high school fade away, but like you said, it is a blessing to have new people in your life. I hope you are able to strengthen your relationships with your friends here and also keep your amazing relationship with your family.
ReplyDeleteIt's really encouraging to hear that youre relationship with your family has also grown stronger. I think one of the things i struggle with out here at wheaton is keeping in contact with my family back home, and even though im not doing the best job i know its important. I hope you can continue to build and maintain the relationships youve made here at wheaton and also the ones youve already established back home.
