Mentor Blog 2

In the past two weeks I have been able to talk with my mentor a lot more than I would normally get to talk with him. Because in those two weeks we both had our spring breaks, we were able to Facetime and go deeper than just our usually small talk conversation.

My mentor applied to multiple internships and is beginning to hear back from them. Sadly, all the internships that he applied to were across the country, so if he were to get one them that would mean I would not see him over the summer. I jokingly told him that I am hoping he does not get any of them so we can hang out during the summer. After saying that, he told me how trusting God with his future is something that is so hard. Even when we tell ourselves and others that we do, our lifestyles and the things that we worry about do not always reflect whole hearted trust. He reminded me that it is so hard as students who work and study for jobs and security for our futures, to be okay with things like not getting into internships that could potentially be life changing for us in terms of our careers. However, he reminded that its crucial for us, as Christians among others in society, to stay rooted in the truth that God is taking us exactly where he wants us to go and that as long as we are being faithful and obedient with the opportunities that he has given us, we are going to be okay. It was a great reminder and encouraging for him to tell me, as a college student as well, that our futures hold good things and that we do not need to worry when things aren’t going according to our plans; because God’s plan. Hopefully he will hear back from all of his internships soon and by then we’ll see where he should go and what he should do.

One thing that I took from our casual conversation was how important it is to process your thoughts, emotions, and situations with someone. When you try to digest and process these things by yourself, you reap the benefits of processing, but you can only get so far because you are limited to what you know and how you have handled these things in the past. But processing and talking with a friend or mentor allows us to get the full effects of processing, but also the insight, wisdom, and guidance that we would not be able to give ourselves, had we just tried to deal with everything on our own.

I am glad we were able to talk frequently over the past couple weeks and got a lot of our conversations.

  1. I think its super cool that you want to be so close to your mentor in the summer. I have actually been struggleing with the same thing. My mentor is one of my best friends and I have noticed that I wont get the same time I would in the summer!

  2. I'm glad you were able to talk more with your mentor and have great conversations with him over the break. I definitely resonated with the issue of feeling unsure about the future and worrying over how our lives will look after college. However, its great that your mentor was able to remind you about having peace in God and trusting in Him with our lives since He has plans for all of us.

  3. I was really challenged by what your mentor said about telling ourselves and others that we trust God, but not having that reflected in our lifestyles or the things we choose to worry about. I think I tell myself that I trust God, but this made me see the room for improvement I have concerning the area of trust through the lifestyle I live and the worries I have.
