Mentor Blog #2

This past month Dan and I have been going through “Purpose of a Driven Life”. Going through the book with a mentor has been eye opening for not only me, but for him as well. Some of the topics in the book were great conversation starters. One of the topics that we talked about that stuck out to me the most was a conversation about our purpose in this world.
Ever since attending Wheaton this conversation has always been simple. Someone would ask me “What is your purpose in life?” and I would reply that it is to further Christ’s Kingdom in whatever activities I took part in. But, after reading through the devotional and talking through it with Dan, I began to realize that my purpose on this earth is so much more than just a series of objectives to fulfill a goal that I was not very committed too. When Dan asked me what I thought my purpose was and I gave my typical response, he asked me how I live that out in my every day life. This caught me off guard because usually there is no follow up question to my answer. As he saw me struggling to answer this question, he began telling stories of his younger self. He told me when he was younger he was just like me, ambitious and eager to learn, yet he did not know the motive behind why. He told me to ponder on his question and let him know the next time I talked with him about what I could come up with.

As I was pondering the reasons behind everything that I am doing today, I have come to a conclusion. Everything that I am doing today is setting me up to be a better leader/teammate for the Kingdom of God. I realized that I should not just blindly follow a mission statement from the college I attend, but I should create a goal for myself that I want to achieve and set small objectives that will get me towards that goal. I also realized that the goal should not be for self glory, but it should be to further advanced the name of Jesus Christ.

  1. Thanks for sharing. Being able to see the purpose in the day-to-day little things is so important as we are on our journeys with Christ. One of the amazing things about our faith is that it allows us to see meaning and find joy in the smallest or most seemingly insignificant things.

  2. Kyong I have heard great things about this book, I am very eager to give this one a read. I love to here how you desire to understand more behind the vocation that God has set forth for you! I think if you continue in this path of hungering to learn more each and every day I think you will go on to do great things not only for yourself and others, but most importantly for the Kingdom of God!

  4. I've actually never gone through a book with a mentor figure before. Its encouraging to see you gain insight and learn from this more so as opposed to going through the book alone. I think its even better how you were able to go through a book relating to your faith that was able to challenge yourself to grow and change!
