For my final meeting with my mentor, we talked about getting involved in the church. This is something I did a great job of back in Nebraska but since coming to Wheaton I have not really tried very hard to get involved in any churches. My mentor talked to me about the importance of finding a church starting to serve there. Even if it is just a little, a little is better than nothing he said.
The main church he advised me to get involved with was college church. There are a few reasons for this. The first being that I have a lot of family members who went to and still attend college church. So, that means that I already have a lot of connections at college church. And that would definitely be nice serving along side family. It would also be super cool if I could help in the youth group because I have multiple cousins who attend the college church youth group. The next reason, is that my brother, Caleb, has been very involved in the college group part of college church this last year so I know some of the college pastors and they kind of expect me to help out next year. That feels good to be wanted but at the same time I do not want to do something because others expect or want it, I want to do stuff that I feel called to do. So, I will have to try to find out if I am just trying to please others or if it something that I should actually be doing. I would say the last reason why my mentor would suggest college church is that he attends there. So, of course he would want me to go there because it is his home church.
I am not sure what I am going to do yet. Part of me definitely wants to go and help at college church, but than another part is leaning against it. I think part of that not wanting to help is coming from me being lazy and not wanting to have extra stuff to do. I also have been going to compass church and not college church recently. So, it almost feels weird to go help at college group or youth group when I do not even go to that church anymore.
We will see what I decide for next year. At this point I am not sure. I am meeting with the college group pastor from college church on Monday, so we will see if that makes up my mind, if not, than I do not know what will. All I know is no matter what, whether it be at college church or compass I really do what to get involved somewhere.
