Mentee Blog #3
I had my last mentee meeting the other day, which was bittersweet since it will be the last time I see for her four months. It’s crazy to think that at the beginning of the semester, I thought I would dread these mentor meetings but I ended up loving them. Once again, this meeting was great and I learned a lot again about my faith, work ethic, and my mentor.
First, I learned a lot about my faith. Throughout all of these meetings, I continue to grow in my faith, so this paragraph is more about the culmination of all of our talks, not just our last one. It was really fun to have a mentor that was going through the same seasons of life when I was, because the advice that I got each time was just what I needed. In the beginning of this semester, I got advice that I can’t go through the motions in my faith, because it’s easy to let chapel be your quiet time for that day, but being alone with God is completely different than worshipping at chapel. During my season, I got advice to keep my head up and push through, always looking to Christ because He was the only one who could get me through the season. At the end of the year, I got the advice to end strong and not forget the lessons I learned for this entire year.
Not only did I grow in my faith, but I also grew in my work ethic. Like I mentioned last blog, I had to learn what it means to take a break and let myself relax. I had to learn that it’s okay to not be doing anything; in fact, it might even be good for me. At the same time, during the season, it is important to give everything you have. It’s not good enough to go through the motions during the season, because you’re letting the team and yourself down by doing that. At the same time, when you feel your work ethic slipping, don’t stay silent and suffer by yourself. Basketball is a team sport for a reason: support. And if you’re struggling, there are probably other people who are struggling too. Talking to them will both solidify friendships and forge team unity.
Lastly, I learned a lot about my mentor through this process. Before this, I saw her as a teammate and friend, but I did not approach her for advice necessarily. Following these assignments, though, I feel completely different about coming to her for advice and even just support. I’ve been able to see her model both faith and work ethic right in front of me, and through these blogs, I’ve been able to hear it too.
Overall, as I mentioned earlier, these assignments ended up being pleasant surprises for me. Something that I thought was going to be useless ended up being one of the most useful things I did this semester. I’ve really enjoyed this assignment specifically because I have grown in my faith, my work ethic, and I have gotten to know my mentor in a new way.
