This is a busy season for me! I have classes finishing up and
we have had many qualifying rounds for the golf team. We have our conference tournament
coming up so all of us are trying to qualify for a spot. So after having
classes and being exhausted from golf it is hard to get homework done. I want
to relax in my dorm room after a long day but that’s not how the world works.
There are many nights where I don’t get enough sleep because golf practice and
team dinner go until 7 or 730 and then I have homework to do. This can be
tolling.
Recently I have been keeping up with my mentor (Ben) and he’s
keeping me calm during these times. We talk
about how busy we are and how are finals are going to be difficult. My brother
has been a calming presence this year. I took public speaking this quad and I’m
not naturally a public speaker. I have never been good at public speaking and I
have a long way to go to be good. I talk to my brother about how I’m nervous
for a speech or how I don’t think I can do this. Whenever I’m stressed about
anything he tells me the same thing but it never gets old. He always tells me
that what happens in accolades doesn’t matter. As long as you put your best
effort forth that is all you can ask for. This says a lot coming from my
brother. He has been successful since the beginning of his life. In high school
he was always at the top of his class and he was a good athlete as well. He
also did this at the college level. So hearing something like that coming out
of a successful person’s mouth had worth. I also have an internship that I’m
excited for but I’m nervous about it. I’m going into a completely new environment
this summer and want to excel to further my career. I want to prove that I will
be a good employee. I discuss with my brother and he says nice things. He says
things like All you have to do is be yourself. If you can’t be yourself there,
then it’s not a good fit. This was good
advice and it calmed me down. I’m happy with my mentor.
Its encouraging to see the bond you and your brother have. I think its great that you have someone as close as your brother to keep you accountable and encourage you through a busy time in your life. I hope that you can follow in your brother's footsteps and be successful in your internship opportunity this summer.
ReplyDeleteLuke, glad to see you've gotten something out of your mentor relationship. There's actually a decent body of psychological research behind your brothers' idea: a constant focus on being "better," creates a life full of performance goals. A life centered on being your "best," and being content with whatever that may be is often linked to higher happiness, and ultimately to higher performance. As we all seek to find our purpose in life, it's important to keep in mind that we're called to maximize the talents which God has given us. Of him who has received much, much will be expected-- but don't go asking me to learn vector calculus!
