I spoke to my mentor recently about the most effective way to move up in an organization. In the past, employees typically had to work their way up within a organization. Starting at a entry level job, employees move up through mid-level, managerial positions and then hopefully get promoted to a executive level position after obtaining several years of experience within a company.
However, more recently, companies have been hiring more executives that have served as consultants to the company for a number of years. By doing so, companies are hiring people who they have a relationship with previously (employer-consultant relationship), know the values of a company and have insight on the issues and shortcomings of the company they would be consulting for.
After college, I hope to enter either the healthcare administration/advising field or obtain some role in financial services. As my mentor and I got deeper into talking about the problems of healthcare, he reiterated that in order to make a impact, you need to understand the fundamental, systemic issues of healthcare system and reasonable solutions that could be implemented quickly and effectively. I am currently taking a Business of Health course at Wheaton and it has really sparked a passion for fixing a broken and greedy healthcare system that has drifted from being cost-effective and patient-cetnered care. The professor of this course is currently working for Aon, a consulting company, that helps other companies with their benefits strategy and the healthcare coverage quality for their companies. My mentor/dad encouraged me to reach out to my professor to get to know what he does in a deeper understanding.
Through this connection, I hope to gain further insight in the healthcare industry while also further exploring strategies in moving up in hierarchy within companies.

Matt, this sounds like an awesome opportunity for you in the future! The healthcare system desperately needs people who love the industry, greatly desire to help people, and do so not for their own gain. I hope that through your meetings and gaining this insight from your conversations continues to spark a fire for you to help change this industry.
ReplyDeleteI think you're going to be a good fit for this industry, and it needs people that are going to be sympathetic to the real issues and concerns of the people in it. It's an industry that really does affect people's lives (literally), and I think you have a great mentality heading into it.
